Busy with Portrait Commissions...

I haven't blogged recently as I have started working on a few portrait commissions. I did complete the pastel piece of Brian above just before starting on the commissions, and I really enjoy working in pastel - I find the process much more intuitive than working with pencils.

One of the portrait commissions is particularly interesting and challenging, as I am creating a color portrait based on several old black and white photos, and working with the client to get the coloring correct. I am posting all of the commissions to my online gallery, but only upon client delivery and approval.

that turned out great Holly! What brand pastels etc. are you using? & could you post a close-up of his face?

Holly we should get together and go to a museum sometime and pick apart old paintings together! I think we might each pick up on different things.

Love the pastel commissions, especially the background technique in "Brian".

Love the subtlety of the colours. Another great portrait. Do you find pastels easier, quicker?

Great Portrait, Holly! I would love to know a bit about your feelings on how cp and pastels compare in terms of how you plan and execute a piece in each medium. Not TOO demanding, am I? ;-)

nice work Holly! jeez take away the goat-tee and he looks a heck of a lot like me, lol! i would venture to guess that you find a lot more room for spontaniety in pastels as opposed to CP?

Holly, the pastel portrait turned out terrific! You took to it so naturally. What brands of pastel did you use?

Sorry for not responding sooner - thank you all for your comments! I've been neglecting my blog in order to focus on commissions, some of which are pastel, some colored pencil. I'll write more about the pastel in an upcoming blog entry...
