Above is a closeup image of what's on my drawing table right now - a 16x12 colored pencil drawing on blue tinted paper. This is my first time working on this type of paper, a fairly textured blue tinted Canson pastel paper. I chose it for two reasons: because the subject is standing in front of a similarly shaded blue wall, and because I wanted to experiment with the paper texture to create the look of different textures in my drawing.

I found myself fighting the texture to create a smooth look for the skin on the face and hands, but it was very helpful in rendering the thermal shirt. I tend to spend the most time on faces and hands anyway, so this wasn't a big deal. To achieve a smooth look, I worked in several layers keeping the pencils very sharp at all times. I used fewer layers of color for the shirt, and worked more quickly so that the pencil didn't cover all of the depressions in the paper, resulting in a textured look.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7803341979782344272.post-66540771502967979142015-02-18T11:48:00.002-05:002015-02-18T11:49:07.324-05:00New Oil PaintingBoy with Book, 14x18, oil on panel.
My latest painting is a 12x9 portrait of my son done on RayMar art panels (Claessens 13 Double Oil Primed Portrait Lined). I enjoyed painting on this surface - the texture holds paint nicely. You can see the texture of the board in this image. I think it would be difficult to paint smaller more detailed work on this panel, but I have ordered some larger sizes and look forward to using them in the future.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7803341979782344272.post-74620486090226653232015-01-20T19:04:00.001-05:002015-01-20T19:04:45.044-05:00Progress on Oil Painting of Boy Reading
