Another update to my self portrait: here you can see the reference photo, which I am following more strictly than usual for the composition. However, you may also notice that I have changed some of the colors and shadows. For example, the shirt has a strange bluish tint in the photo, which is unlike real life. Also, the shadow on my face is very dark and flat in the photo, so I have added some color and contour.

In regards to reference photos, yes the pitfall in working with them is the 2d challenge- e.g. false hues and exaggerated shadowing and shape. So many tweaks have to be made in order to bring a work to life when not having a model on hand. When I used to work in portraiture (self-portraits), I kept a mirror by my table side to catch all the nuances of my face along with reference photos. It helped.
Thanks, Chantell. I sometimes consult a mirror, and sometimes just rely on memory. At this point, I'm becoming almost too aware of the nuances on my face!
